SCAM ALERT – Masquerading as a Registrar
A domain name scam has been circulating around recently. This solicitation is similar to scams targeting trademark owners – it looks official and it has zero legitimate value. The Scammer, Domain Listings, sends a letter to various other businesses that it has acquired contact information and domain registration information about. At first glance, the letter appears to be about the renewal of a business’s domain. To the untrained eye, this would easily pass as a renewal notification for an annual payment of $228.00. After reading further into the letter you find that it is actually for an “Annual Website Domain Listing on internet directory.” By selling this worthless service and stating that they are not a registrar in the fine print, they have some legitimacy that protects them from legal action. This scam is more slight of hand than other fake registrar scams that exist. Many businesses might pay the money thinking they renewed their annual domain name registration only to find they now have a listing on an obscure online directory. No one uses or needs such directories (unless they are selling spots for money). The cost of $228.00 provides no actual value.
Don’t fall for this scam!
